I need a tone tracer. I could also probably use a butt set also. Anything out there? trade for? buy outright?

A tone tracer is a 2 piece gadget that can inject an audible tone (in some RF, I believe), sometimes a warble, sometimes an alternating tone we call a "deedle". It is used to track down a circuit in a phone or network closet. The other end has a pretty sensitive pickup that "sniffs" out that signal and converts it back to a tone you can hear. Helps in a crowded closet where nothing is marked. It can sniff all along the wire, non-contact style.

A butt set is a universal telephone handset that is clipped into a phone circuit for testing. It has a high gain amplifier built in and can also do some sniffing for dial tones.

The name I've heard those tone tracers called by is "fox and hound". There are several inexpensive ones out there. I picked up one for less than $20, and it works very well. I've also used a cheapie telephone as a "butt set" by adding alligator clips to the red and black wires.

Well, a butt set does a bit more than a phone would. For reference:

Low cost tone testers are ok if you need a casual test now and then, but it seems that I am doing quite a bit lately, and I'm tired of borrowing one. If I can't find one used, I'll spring for a new one. Just giving this forum a chance to work out. Smile

The fox/hound I have works very well. It came from circuit specialists (on the web) and comes with an RJ-11 plug as well as alligator clips. I've used much more expensive ones and there is essentially no difference. I've rung out many cables with it.

I am quite familiar with what a butt set does, but for the limited phone stuff I do, the homebrew butt set does fine for me. Have to say though, those Flukes are nice!

More on my cable tracer. It's a Circuit Specialists Cable Tracker. You can see it here:
http://www.circuitspecialists.com/specialty-test-equipment They have a lot of cool stuff. I've purchased several meters from them. Prices are great and so is their customer service.

I have no connection with them aside from being a customer.
